Common useful Emacs Commands

I'm trying to get to grips with EMACS (being a long-term MicroEMACS user). This page is just a collection of notes of commands and customizations I find useful - as an aide-memoir to self.

Windows

C-x 2 -- split current window
C-x 1 -- close all other windows
C-x o -- (letter O) cursor in other window

Buffers

C-x C-b -- list all buffers (and allow selection)

Modes and auto-assitance

M-x generic-mode 'default-generic-mode -- turn off auto indent, etc in the current buffer

Customisations

1: F1 key = "next-buffer" in emacs 21.4

(load-file "~/.emacs.d/prev-next-buffer.el")
(global-set-key [f1] 'next-buffer)
  • Later versions of emacs apparently have "next-buffer" built in.
