Mounting external LVM disk in Linux

Disclaimer: I make no guarantees what so ever that the following is correct or is safe. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have adequate backups before trying these steps. Dont blame me if you wipe your data by following (or failing to follow correctly) these steps.

Attaching an external LVM-formatted disk to an existing system..

  • connect the drive
  • run "lvm"
    • pvscan     (note the PV name)
    • lvscan      (note the LV names)
    • lvchange -ay /dev/{pv-name-here}
  • Now you can mount the volumes using
    • mount /dev/{pv-name-here}/{lv-name-here} /mnt

Detaching is the reverse..

  • umount /mnt
  • lvm
    • lvchange -an /dev/{pv-name-here}
